INSPIRED BY NATURE

The design of Model Z is inspired by nature, millions of years of evolution can´t be wrong

We are totally aware about the design freedom that 3D printing technology gives us, but this freedom should be used in a clever way otherwise you are not taking advantage of this incredible way to manufacture things, We are professional engineers with a lot of experience working for Airbus, this experience allow us to be fully aware that any design is conditioned by the manufacturing process.
A good design is always a compromise between stress, functionality, assembly, aerodynamic, flying characteristics and manufacturing costs and limitation. Due to the reason that manufacturing costs and limitation are not a restriction anymore, we can improve the other elements.

Convergent evolution

3d printed wing biomicry

Convergent evolution is the independent evolution of similar features in species of different lineages. Convergent evolution creates analogous structures that have similar form or function but were not present in the last common ancestor of those groups.

We realized that the internal structures of insect wing, bird wing and leaves were really similar despite they are species with no common ancestor. These species have found similar solution for similar problems. We decided to adapt this structure to our Model Z wing and after some stress analysis and as expected the results were satisfactory.

Biomimicry

Biomimicry is an approach to innovation that seeks solutions to human challenges by emulating nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies. The core idea is that nature has already solved many of the problems we are grappling with. Animals, plants, and microbes are the consummate engineers. After billions of years of research and development, failures are fossils, and what surrounds us is the secret to survival.

But not only the internal structure the wing is inspired by nature, the wing planform shape is similar to many birds like the swift
